Eid-ul-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice

Selamat Hari Raya Idul Adha

The Eid-ul-Adha is a major religious event in the lives of Muslims. Although only the pilgrims in Makkah (Mecca) can participate in the Hajj (pilgrimage) fully, all the other Muslims in the world join with them by celebrating the Eid-ul-Adha or Festival of Sacrifice on the 10th of Dzulhijjah.

Muslims around the world wear their nicest clothing and attend a special prayer gathering in the morning. This is followed by a short sermon, after which everyone stands up to hug and greet one another. Then, they visit each other's homes and join in festive meals with special dishes, beverages, and desserts.

Eid-ul-Adha celebrates the occasion when Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) was willing to sacrifice his son to show his obedience to God (Allah). Like the pilgrims in Makkah, those Muslims who can afford to do so will sacrifice an animal in commemoration of Ibrahim's sacrifice of a lamb in place of his son. One-third of the meat is given to the poor and needy, the rest shared by family and friends.

The Sunnah of Eid
Following are strongly recommended to do on Eid-ul-Adha Day:
1 Wake up early.
2 Prepare for personal cleanliness; take care of details of clothing, etc
3 Take a Ghusl (bath) after Fajr (dawn).
4 Brush the teeth.
5 Dress up, putting on best clothes available, whether new or cleaned old ones.
6 Use perfume (men only).
7 Have breakfast after Shalaat (prayer).
8 Go to prayer ground early.
9 Perform Shalaat-ul-Eid in congregation in an open place except when whether is not permitting like rain, etc.
10 Use two separate routes to and from the prayer ground.
11 Recite the following Takbir on the way to Shalaat and until the beginning of Shalaat-ul-Eid. On Eid-ul-Adha, Takbir starts from Maghrib on the 9th Dzulhijjah and last until the ‘Asr on the 12th Dzulhijjah: Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu-Akbar. Laa ilaa ha illlallah. Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar. Wa lillaahilhamd. (Allah is greater, Allah is greater. There is no God but Allah. Allah is greater, Allah is greater. And all praises are for Allah).
