Historical Places In Mecca

Selamat Hari Raya Idul Adha

Below are some important places in Mecca which, though not connected with Hajj rites, are worth visiting due to their significance in the early history of Islam.

Masjid Jinn (Jinn Mosque)
The Prophet Muhammad was reciting the Qur'an here when a group of jinn passing by heard him. They were impressed and converted to Islam. This mosque is also known as Masjid Bai’et. The Prophet recited the Qur’an to the Jinns and took bai’et (oath of loyalty) from them. A verse of the Qur'an in Surah Jinn narrates this incident.

Hira Cave
Cave Hira is situated in Jabal Nur (Mount of Light) about 5 km from Mecca. The Prophet Muhammad used to retire here in solitude and spend long hours in reflection and meditation. Here, he received his first divine revelation from God (ALLAH) through arcangel Djibril (Gabriel).

Thour Cave
Thour Cave is situated in Jabal Thour (Mount of Thour) about 8 km to the south of Mecca. Here the Prophet Muhammad and Abu Bakar Shidieq lay hidden for 3 days at the time of their migration (hijrah) to Madinah. They hid from the pursuit of Quraish people who forbade them from leaving Mecca.

The Quraish people almost entered the cave because they believed that Prophet Muhammad was in there. But since there were a spider web covering the cave entrance and a bird on its nest nearby, they thought it was impossible that someone can enter the cave without ruining the spider web. Then, the pursuers returned to Mecca.

Jabal Rahmah (Mount of Mercy)
Jabal Rahmah is a sacred hill in the middle of the plain of Arafat. The Prophet Muhammad delivered his famous sermon on the occasion of the Farewell Hajj (Wada’ Hajj) near this hill.
