Destiny’s Child
Name : Destiny’s Child
Members : Beyoncé Knowles
Kelly Rowland
Michelle Williams
Formed : 1990

Biography:

Destiny's Child were formed in 1990, in Houston, Texas, when Beyoncé Knowles and LaTavia Roberson were just nine years old. They became friends after they both met at an audition. In 1992, Beyoncé's cousin Kelly Rowland joined the group, and soon afterward they landed an appearance on Star Search, where they performed a rap song.

In 1993, LeToya Luckett joined the group and they spent the next few years performing in Houston clubs and eventually performing as opening act for artists like Dru Hill, and Immature. In 1997, Destiny's Child finally landed a record deal with Columbia Records.

Destiny's Child released their debut album in early 1998. Its lead single, ‘No No No’, was a smash hit, selling over a million copies and topping the R&B charts, followed by the singles, ‘With Me’ and ‘Get on the Bus’. The album itself eventually went platinum.

In 1999, the group released their second album, Writing's on the Wall. Its lead single ‘Bills, Bills, Bills’ became the group's first number one pop hit and second R&B number one. The album entered the charts at number six upon its release. Although the second single, ‘Bug a Boo’, didn't make a hit, but the third single, ‘Say My Name’, was another massive hit. The album hit number one on both pop and R&B charts for three weeks in early 2000, and made Destiny's Child a pop-cultural phenomenon.

In December 1999, Latavia Roberson and Letoya Luckett attempted to split with Destiny's Child’s manager, Mathew Knowles. Even though they had no intention to leave the group, they both as well as many fans were surprised to find two new members, Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin, in the video ‘Say My Name’ which was premiered in February 2000. Infuriated, Roberson and Luckett took legal action, suing the manager and their former bandmates for breach of partnership. Meanwhile, the group’s next single, ‘Jumpin' Jumpin'’, hit the Top Ten, and the album went on to sell eight million copies.

Just five months after joining, Farrah Franklin split with the group in July 2000. Now a trio, Destiny's Child recorded the theme song for Charlie's Angels, ‘Independent Women, Pt. 1’, which shot to the charts and spent 11 weeks at number one.

Destiny's Child now was the biggest female R&B group. Their third album, Survivor, was released in the spring 2001, and entered the charts at number one. The single ‘Survivor’ became a huge hit, as well as the single ‘Bootylicious’, which also became the group's fourth number one pop single. The single ‘Emotion’ was also successful. The album sold over four million copies.

At the end of 2001, the group released a Christmas album, 8 Days of Christmas, and announced plans for several side projects, including solo albums from all three members. In 2004, the trio reunited and released their fifth album, Destiny Fulfilled.
